The seventh in our series on this year’s group projects by Sci Com students is an animation, which came accompanied by a children’s book, to explain the history of astronomy and the nature of scientific progress to 9-11 year olds. Created by Elfy Chiang, Georgia Bladon and Rayner Simpson
Our aim was to explain the history of one line of scientific understanding in a way children could understand but without oversimplifying the processes involved in science or implying a linear progression of ideas. The idea is that a parent and child can read the book and scan the QR codes embedded in it to take them to particular parts of the animation that will try to explain the concept further. Or a child can watch the animation as a whole and still get a whole sense of the story.
Elfy Chiang, Georgia Bladon and Rayner Simpson are all currently studying for an MSc in Science Communication at Imperial College, London.
